Private Residence
Additions and Renovations
West Whiteland Township, PA
What started as a kitchen renovation and small addition for a family who
enjoys entertaining, but lacks the space to do it in, turned into an organizational
element through a few simple moves. The existing house is a 100 year old
rural farmhouse that received various additions and renovations over the
years; none of which connected well with the other, leaving the house disjointed
and maze-like in its circulation.
By widening one opening and creating another in an existing wall, all the public parts of the home are now visually and physically connected, with the kitchen serving as the symbolic nucleus. The kitchen addition itself provides clerestory ceilings, affording this central space plenty of natural daylight.
Skylights help emphasize its importance. On the exterior, cedar shake siding and custom windows on the addition help to blend it with the existing home, while a new wrap around porch extension and copper roof over the porches help to visually tie all the parts of the house together.
