George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science
Additions and Renovations
Philadelphia, PA
Estimated completion August 2008
George
Washington Carver High School is a 105,000 SF existing facility built in
the 1950’s and serves as a science, engineering and technology magnet school
for the School District of Philadelphia. For this project, the entire facility
is rearranged programmatically and renovated, and approximately 40,000 SF
is added. The educational design functions around the engineering, science
and technology curriculum and attempts to use the new facility as a teaching
tool for green design.
The approach to the design of the facility is exceptionally unique in that it utilizes a full-fledged dynamic community planning process, which directly involves the community, faculty, students, administration, and local design professionals in the brainstorming process and charrette design. For more information on this process, see “Getting REAL: The Philadelphia Story” at www.designshare.com.
Also of major significance is that the project serves as the School District of Philadelphia’s PILOT GREEN SCHOOL PROJECT, an effort led by the Delaware Valley Green Building Council.
